It's almost upon us! Monday is Royal Mail's recommended last posting day for Christmas. We'll still be dispatching those panicked last-minute packages on Tuesday, but then are heading off to Switzerland. (I had thought we'd be treating Claudia to her first sight of snow, but it seems we could actually be leaving the white Christmas behind us!)

We'll be back on 28 December. Until then, the shop stays open but orders placed now will only be posted on our return. Don't count on emails being answered before then, either. Rather, look ahead in anticipation to the fabulous January sale... and of course, for those in the area, to the first Open House event of 2010: taking place on 2 January, giving you a first shot at the sale bargains. (The online sale starts on Sunday 3rd.) As usual it's from 3-6pm on Saturday afternoon, at my home in Isleworth, west London, easily accessible by public transport; please leave a comment or email me if you'd like to be added to the Open House mailing list for full details.

Since this is the sale preview, there won't be any other OH special offers, but there is free swag. You can take your purchases home in one of these.

I suppose with two weeks to go, it's a bit soon to be talking about "last minute", but somehow it feels to me as if the holidays are practically upon us... which makes a change, really, from my usual pattern of thinking it's MONTHS away until, suddenly, it's Christmas Eve. Anyway. Three things.

1. Last orders for Christmas delivery must be placed by Monday 21 December. On Tuesday 22nd, we'll be making our last post office run and heading off to Switzerland. (Elfbaby gets to see snow! Yay!) I'll be back in action on the 28th. Over the break, the shop will be open, but orders will have to wait and emails probably won't be answered until our return. I'm sure you understand.

2. You've seen our gift ideas page, right? Just checking. These are all our most coveted items, plus some cute new stocking stuffers. And a man bag! I do particularly like that.

3. Ooh er: my printer has just packed it in. I'm hoping to sort it out tomorrow but just to warn you - printed gift vouchers may be a tiny little bit of a problem right now. (Electronic vouchers, obviously, no problem at all.) Stay tuned for further updates.

4. Bonus point, just because I hate to end on a downer: I have a really, really, really lovely box of yarn from Fyberspates sitting in the other room, and another on the way. These new-to-us yarns won't be up before Christmas, I shouldn't think, but it's something to look forward to. Yay!

Fleece Artist Slubby Blue
Lantern Moon Jewel and Maya bags
Pattern tamers
Any shawl pin
Karatstix Sokblokkers
...and finally, a brand new product that isn't on the website yet (but will be in a few days) - the must-have Emergency Survival bag. (Based on this oh-so-resonant comic strip.)

Five years ago, if you had offered me yarn spun from camelhair, I would have said very firmly but politely: "No thanks." I would have thought, less politely: "Are you KIDDING?" I mean, I like soft yarn! Floofy yarn! Delectably strokable yarn! And camels... well. Not so strokable, right?

More fool me, then, because it turns out, camel yarn is about as delicious as anything I've ever touched.

Living in harsh climatic conditions, camels have developed cunning insulation in the form of a downy undercoat. Spun into yarn, that undercoat is To.Die.For. It appears I have misjudged the not-so-humble* camel oh so harshly. Camel yarn? Yes PLEASE!

It costs, of course. The downy winter undercoat is shed in the spring, when it's gathered by hand and processed for spinning - the processing includes such finicky work as removing the not-so-floofy guard hairs, so this takes time and care. Which costs. I reckon it's worth it. If you've touched it, I reckon you'll agree.

A close fibre cousin to camel, alpaca yarn is rather better known, and more widely revered. It's a bit easier to believe these animals will produce yummy fibre because they look the part: cuddly! Floofy! Awww... we all want alpacas in our back yards, don't we? I hear they make great pets, too.

Alpaca yarn too must be carefully processed - while they can be sheared like sheep, there are a few coarse beard hairs that must be separated from the good stuff. (Compare llamas: like camels, they have two layers of hair, the soft undercoat and the coarser guard hairs. The undercoat produces fibre that's just as soft and delish as alpaca, but it's harder to process because of the need to get rid of the guard hairs, which is why you won't find much llama yarn on the market.)

What's it good for?
Both camel and alpaca yarns are very good at doing what the animals grew their coats for in the first place: keeping warm! They'll do as good a job of insulation as the more familiar wool - but premium smooth merino, not scratchy Shetland. (Not knocking the Shetland. It's a fine thing in its own right. But scratchy.) Unless you have an allergy, there's no danger of itch with these lovely yarns. Alpaca also resembles wool in its ability to absorb moisture yet still feel dry.

Less like wool is the relative lack of elasticity these fibres display. Admittedly they have more give than, say, cotton, but in pure form, they won't be the best choice for stretchy fabrics like ribbing; and you'll need to take care not to let them streeeeetch out once knitted up. You'll often see these fibres in blends - typically with wool yarns, to improve the bounce and memory; or with silk, to capitalise on that drape and lustre. In a wool blend, they'll do well for warm, cosy sweaters, even patterns rich in ribs and cables that require a fair bit of sproing (ask me how I know). With silk, they become absolutely divine material for drapey, warm, luxurious lace.

Try them out!
The fun part: treat yourself to a little sample or two with 10% off, using the discount code YONFCAMEL. These yarns are absolutely exquisite, some of our bestsellers (and my personal favourites), so it's a rare opportunity to get them at a discount.

Camelspin: I am perhaps in danger of banging on too much about this yarn, but it really is incredible. So soft! So richly coloured! So utterly divine in every way!
River: Blended with both merino and silk, this is perhaps the ultimate winter alpaca yarn! Lofty, soft, and gorgeously hued.
Suri Blue: Another wool blend, this is a great value laceweight. I'm dying to make a whole sweater in this — as soon as I find the time...
Newgale: Our most luxurious alpaca yarn, this combines it with silk and cashmere. Oooooooh. Now that's posh.

_____
* You look a camel in the eye and call him humble. I dare you.

I just have to tell you all I am *so* excited about some of the new products we're getting in. They're coming thick and fast; we've unpacked gorgeous stuff from Artyarns and Offhand Designs, plus some nifty little treats to surprise you - cute stocking fillers and such. (Watch the new products page to see them as they come in.)

But best of all, we will soon FINALLY have our own Purlescence tote bags. And they are so, so, so cute. Trust me. These were worth waiting for.

So as we all know there's been a lot of postal disruption lately, and I know you are wondering about whether your orders will reach you promptly. Well, as it happens, it seems everything we are sending out is indeed arriving safely; sometimes it takes a day longer than usual, but I haven't had any more reports of delays than normal. So that's encouraging.

I have of course looked into alternative courier arrangements. Those I've found have generally been either expensive or (according to reports) unreliable, so I remain unconvinced that they're a better choice than good old Royal Mail. RM's Special Delivery service is still guaranteed, so if you need something in a hurry, please let me know and I'll send it that way for an extra charge of £4.

This might be a good time to explain why I don't include SD as a regular option at checkout. It is the most secure method of delivery, and for that reason I would like to offer it. But... naturally, if you're paying £4 more, you will also expect next-day delivery; and unfortunately I am not able to promise that on a regular basis. Life with a baby is simply too unpredictable. However! As many of you already know - I am always keen to help out in a knitting emergency. If you need something urgently, for whatever reason, drop me a line and I will do my level best to make it happen. That's a promise.

I tidied my knitting cupboard t'other day. (Very satisfying. I even sorted through my buttons.) As pleased as I am to be able to find things again, I am just a little bit aghast at the evidence of my <del>sloth</del> lack of time and <del>forgetfulness</del> changing priorities. Heaps of WIPs and planned projects turned up that I had more or less forgotten about, while never quite meaning to actually ditch them. Three pairs of socks, two of them gifts. One pair handwarmers. One hat and scarf set intended as a gift last Christmas (oops). One maternity cardigan (ha!). One sweater begun pre-pregnancy. One planned shawl (another gift). Whatever happened to that monogamy I used to be so fond of?

Ah well. Commitment ain't what it used to be. I'm squeezing knitting into whatever tiny corners of time I can find, and frankly if it doesn't excite me, it's not going to get made. Much of that list has officially been frogged (although funnily enough, "officially" doesn't mean "literally"; I pulled the needles out but didn't actually rip, wanting to be done with all the tidying before Claudia got bored). The sweaters are still living in hope; the hat and scarf set has changed its destined pattern but will still (supposedly) be made for the same recipient; one pair of socks is nearly done and will be finished by, shall we say Christmas? That shawl will probably get made, too. Eventually. (Not by Christmas.) But meanwhile, I've reallocated project bags and knitting priorities to more urgent needs: baby knits.

That's a good excuse, right? Right.

My favourites? Cookie A's Clandestine socks are pretty - I love that stitch pattern. Would look lovely in Claudia fingering I think. Kernel has made it straight into my queue, I've been longing to make something in Mini Maiden; the only question now is which colour? Ebony? Ruby? Blackberry? I'm intrigued to see whether the low-contrast variegations of the Blackberry would work... And I think Ruby Red would be a great choice for Fleece Artist Merino 2/6.

Finally, Colonnade is a satisfyingly different shawl shape - and I love the little toggle that turns it into a cape. I can definitely see a spot for this in my wardrobe. Knit in River, or for real indulgence, perhaps in Grande Godiva - yummy!

Technically this article should be called "cellulosic fibres". But that doesn't sound very interesting. And bamboo and seaweed, made into yarn, are certainly exotic.

"Cellulosic fibres" is a category that includes, besides the above, less glamorous sounding materials like rayon and viscose - fibres spun from elaborately processed plant matter, beaten into submission and told to behave like silk. Ooh er! Does that mean that my beloved bamboo is basically just another synthetic? Well, yes, sort of. But it's pretty far removed from the petrochemical synthetic fibres (acrylic, nylon etc); in fact cellulosic fibres still retain special characteristics of their original plants. For instance, bamboo has natural antibacterial properties, making it a fine choice for inclusion in t-shirts and socks. And SeaCell (a brand-name fibre made from seaweed) retains certain anti-inflammatory properties, plus a few trace elements such as magnesium. Pretty nifty idea!

I'm focusing on bamboo and SeaCell, since those are the yarns I stock, but they're far from the only fibres in this category. Corn, for instance, and banana fibre - increasingly new yarns are sounding like they should be on your plate, not in your knitting bag. If you've knit with any of these you'll know that they really do all bring their own special magic to the yarn party; so I'm sticking with my argument that these are truly natural fibres - plastic is plastic, right? But not this stuff.

What's it good for?
Cellulosic fibres resemble silk in some ways (in fact rayon was originally invented and marketed as "artificial silk"); they tend to be strong, slippery, sheeny, and inelastic. They are highly absorbent (bamboo is often used for cloth nappies). Like silk, they beg to be allowed to show off their fabulous drape; but if you're looking for the perfect skin-hugging elastic rib, you'll need to choose a yarn that mixes in something a bit more stretchy.

SeaCell isn't used alone in knitting yarn; I've seen it blended with wool, or with silk. In Sea Wool, it seems to act almost like silk in adding softness and lustre, while the wool gives it that stretch for delicious sockified goodness; in Sea Silk, it makes the fibre even softer. (Can you believe that they've managed to improve on natural silk? Those crazy scientists.) Sea Silk is an incredible yarn for lace. I don't even know how to tell you how yummy it is. It's yummy. Really, really yummy.

Bamboo is also a yarn that manages to be even shinier and softer than silk, and in combination, produces something rather wonderful. By itself, it's not ideal for lace as it doesn't block well; but with other fibres, oh yes! Pure bamboo yarns are often quite splitty - they usually comprise many plies loosely twisted together - but in my opinion, that's a small price to pay for the softness and shine it gives. Thanks to its cool touch, absorbency and drape, not to mention the intensity with which it takes the dye, I rate bamboo very highly for exquisite summer tops.

Try them out!
Use the code YONFEXOTIC at checkout to claim 10% off these yarns:

Handmaiden's Sea Silk was the first SeaCell yarn on the market and is still the one most people think of. Did I mention how yummy? Just one skein is enough to make an incredible shawl or scarf (there's a lovely pattern in the October Yarn Forward).
Sea Wool is equally intriguing but, with the memory of wool added to the mix, more versatile; it's good for socks, scarves, sweaters... beautiful stuff.
Swiss Mountain Silk Bamboo is another blend sure to captivate you. That colour! That shine! That softness! Treat yourself to a couple of skeins for a luxurious lacy scarf or evening top. Mmmmm.
