THE WINNERS OF
What would Cinderella knit?

Judging our inaugural competition was very difficult; there was so much creativity on display. Scoring was in many cases very close. But in the end there were a handful that really stood out, and our two judges (that would be me and my husband, a non-knitter, who provided valuable perspective) were agreed on those that were most appealing.

Because we loved so many, we gave runner-up prizes to three entries; three more made the honourable mentions list. All going well, we hope to have the first patterns online early in 2007.

Enjoy reading these knitterly Cinderella tales, and we hope you'll be inspired to try your hand in one or more of our contests still to come.

Winner: Cinderella's Secret Stockings
By Ruth Ramanan

Ruth's perfectly presented entry wove her design concept seamlessly into the story, with a neat touch of humour and a truly gorgeous pair of stockings to admire. I love the idea of a little secret intarsia crown under the sole... perfect for a girl with diamonds on the soles of her shoes, no?

Winner: The Kingfisher Cloak
By Huan-Hua Chye

Huan-Hua introduced me to an exotic version of the Cinderella story, and adapts it to allow Yeh-Shen to herself be responsible for creating her famous cloak. Beautiful story, beautiful garment.

Runner up: The Fairy Godmother's Scarf
By Catherine Procter

In another wonderfully presented entry, Catherine imagines Cinderella struggling to adapt to palace life. Her design uses an unusual, crochet-like lace pattern and rocaille beads to create a scarf that "sparkles as if powdered with fairy dust"

Runner up: Cinderella's footlets
By Temperance Blackthorne

This entry was unique in being the only design that was obviously Cinderella's - the design features would be lost in anything but glass slippers! I loved the Delft-inspired embroidery.

Runner up: Cinderella's wire-laced bag
By Eilidh Fairfoul

I've never before seen wire knitting used to frame yarn like this, it's gorgeous. I can just imagine the bag sparkling magically as she waltzes off to the ball!

Honourable mentions

It would be tempting to post almost every entry we received - they supplied such a range of pleasures, from acerbic wit to touching pathos. And the designs were gorgeous! Some of my very favourite favourites are named below, and will be posted in full on the blog. We also hope to make patterns from these entries available to you soon.

Freyalyn Close-Hainsworth - Cinderella's knitting lessons
Donyale Grant - The story of Cinderella (with a Useful Moral!)

Kim-Xuan Nguyen - Cinderella's opera gloves (with a rather confused godmother)
