My Dearest Godmother,

I hope you like this scarf I have made for you, as just a small token of my enormous gratitude for what you have done, and of my love for you.

When I first came to the Palace after marrying my Prince, it was wonderful to have no work to do after all my years of drudgery under my stepmother. Then, after a while, I started to feel a bit bored. Of course, there are always people here to talk to, and walk with. I also have a beautiful pony and go riding every day. But I just felt a need to do some really useful work. So I gave my maid the day off, and set out about cleaning my own rooms. I then took my delicate clothes to the laundry and washed them by hand. After that, I made the mistake of heading to the kitchen to make my own lunch. The kitchen, of course, was full of people, and it wasn't ten minutes before the Queen had been told that I was down there, and had summoned me.

The Queen was kind, but stern. I now know that Princesses never ever clean their own rooms, or wash their own clothes, and not only do they not make their own lunch, they never even enter the kitchen. After this admonishment, I timidly explained that I really needed something useful to do. She consulted with Lady Anna, her lady-in-waiting, and they suggested that I could be taught some elegant form of handicraft. I have done too much mending of carelessly treated clothes to want to sew, so I suggested I could knit, explaining that I remember how my dear Mama used to knit for me when I was little. (In fact I still have some of the dishcloths she made, but I kept that to myself!)

Lady Anna has been so helpful in helping me learn, and showing me where to buy the most beautiful yarns. I knew that my first knitted item just had to be for you, my beloved godmother, so I chose the most delicate, fairy-like yarns I could find, and a pattern for this lace scarf.

I have assured the Queen that there is no danger of her catching me cleaning again — knitting is far more fun, and I am totally addicted.

Please come and visit me again soon.

All my love

Cinderella
