THE WINNERS OF
What would Scheherazade knit?

The ultimate storyteller (and penultimate Storytellers!) inspired heaps of flowing, geometric shawls, and much musing on exactly what happened on that final night. (One thousand and first? One thousand and oneth? Quandary!) Intriguingly, we had two (beautiful) moebius designs, just as Alice sparked two illusion knits. What lifted the winners and runners up above the rest (and need I say, it was a really, really difficult choice) was elegance: elegance of design, of narration, and of weaving the two together.

Winner: Scheherazade's Sister's Sampler
By Mary Ross

In this retelling, it's not just the stories that keep the sultan intrigued from night to night; it's the mysteries of knitting! (Well, that would work for me.)

Winner: Scheherazade's Flying Carpet Book Cover
By Tonks

Beautiful scene-setting and a perfectly simple, perfectly gorgeous concept.

Runner up: The Storyteller's Shawl
By Hanne-Maria Linnanen

In this love story told from two sides, knitting a complicated lace wrap gives Scheherazade hope for the future — and inspires love in the sultan's heart.

Runner up: Beaded Shawl
By Katy Wickersham

The concept is simple: Scheherazade's stories are woven into the shawl itself, with genies and palaces forming elegant lace patterns. The beaded fringe, reminding Scheherazade of the dead wives before her, is a nice touch.
